In this tutorial we learn how to install pacman on Fedora 36.

What is `pacman`

Pacman is the package manager used by the Arch distribution. It can be used to install Arch into a container or to recover an Arch installation from a Fedora system (see arch-install-scripts package for instructions). Pacman is a frontend for the ALPM (Arch Linux Package Management) library Pacman does not strive to “do everything.” It will add, remove and upgrade packages in the system, and it will allow you to query the package database for installed packages, files and owners. It also attempts to handle dependencies automatically and can download packages from a remote server. Arch packages are simple archives, with .pkg.tar.gz extension for binary packages and .src.tar.gz for source packages.

We can use yum or dnf to install pacman on Fedora 36. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install pacman.

Install pacman on Fedora 36 Using dnf

Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache --refresh

After updating yum database, We can install pacman using dnf by running the following command:

sudo dnf -y install pacman

Install pacman on Fedora 36 Using yum

Update yum database with yum using the following command.

sudo yum makecache --refresh

After updating yum database, We can install pacman using yum by running the following command:

sudo yum -y install pacman

How To Uninstall pacman on Fedora 36

To uninstall only the pacman package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove pacman
