How To Install mtr on Debian 10
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install mtr on Debian 10.
What is mtr
mtr is:
mtr combines the functionality of the ’traceroute’ and ‘ping’ programs in a single network diagnostic tool.
As mtr starts, it investigates the network connection between the host mtr runs on and a user-specified destination host. After it determines the address of each network hop between the machines, it sends a sequence of ICMP ECHO requests to each one to determine the quality of the link to each machine. As it does this, it prints running statistics about each machine.
There are three methods to install mtr on Debian 10. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install mtr Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install mtr using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install mtr

Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install mtr using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install mtr
Install mtr Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install mtr using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install mtr
How To Uninstall mtr on Debian 10
To uninstall only the mtr package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove mtr
Uninstall mtr And Its Dependencies
To uninstall mtr and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 10, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove mtr
Remove mtr Configurations and Data
To remove mtr configuration and data from Debian 10 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge mtr
