How To Install xemacs on CentOS 8

Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install xemacs on CentOS 8.

What is xemacs

XEmacs is a highly customizable open source text editor and application development system. It is protected under the GNU General Public License and related to other versions of Emacs, in particular GNU Emacs. Its emphasis is on modern graphical user interface support and an open software development model, similar to Linux. This package contains XEmacs built for X Windows with MULE support.

We can use yum or dnf to install xemacs on CentOS 8. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install xemacs.

Install xemacs on CentOS 8 Using dnf

Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache --refresh

The output should look something like this:

After updating yum database, We can install xemacs using dnf by running the following command:

sudo dnf -y install xemacs

Install xemacs on CentOS 8 Using yum

After updating yum database, We can install xemacs using yum by running the following command:

sudo yum -y install xemacs

How To Uninstall xemacs on CentOS 8

To uninstall only the xemacs package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove xemacs
