How To Install rtorrent on CentOS 8

rtorrent is BitTorrent client based on libtorrent

Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install rtorrent on CentOS 8.

What is rtorrent

A BitTorrent client using libtorrent, which on high-bandwidth connections is able to seed at 3 times the speed of the official client. Using ncurses its ideal for use with screen or dtach. It supports saving of sessions and allows the user to add and remove torrents and scanning of directories for torrent files to seed and/or download.

We can use yum or dnf to install rtorrent on CentOS 8. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install rtorrent.

Install rtorrent on CentOS 8 Using dnf

Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache --refresh

The output should look something like this:

After updating yum database, We can install rtorrent using dnf by running the following command:

sudo dnf -y install rtorrent

Install rtorrent on CentOS 8 Using yum

How To Uninstall rtorrent on CentOS 8

To uninstall only the rtorrent package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove rtorrent
