How To Install netcdf on CentOS 8

netcdf is Libraries for the Unidata network Common Data Form

Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install netcdf on CentOS 8.

What is netcdf

NetCDF (network Common Data Form) is an interface for array-oriented data access and a freely-distributed collection of software libraries for C, Fortran, C++, and perl that provides an implementation of the interface. The NetCDF library also defines a machine-independent format for representing scientific data. Together, the interface, library, and format support the creation, access, and sharing of scientific data. The NetCDF software was developed at the Unidata Program Center in Boulder, Colorado. NetCDF data is o Self-Describing data it contains. o Network-transparent can be accessed by computers with different ways of storing integers, characters, and floating-point numbers. o Direct-access efficiently, without first reading through all the preceding data. o Appendable dimension without copying the dataset or redefining its structure. The structure of a NetCDF dataset can be changed, though this sometimes causes the dataset to be copied. o Sharable access the same NetCDF file.

We can use yum or dnf to install netcdf on CentOS 8. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install netcdf.

Install netcdf on CentOS 8 Using dnf

Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache --refresh

The output should look something like this:

CentOS Linux 8 - AppStream 43 kB/s | 4.3 kB 00:00
CentOS Linux 8 - BaseOS 65 kB/s | 3.9 kB 00:00

After updating yum database, We can install netcdf using yum by running the following command:

sudo yum -y install netcdf

How To Uninstall netcdf on CentOS 8

To uninstall only the netcdf package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove netcdf
