How To Install git on CentOS 8
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install git
on CentOS 8.
What is git
Git is a fast, scalable, distributed revision control system with an unusually rich command set that provides both high-level operations and full access to internals. The git rpm installs common set of tools which are usually using with small amount of dependencies. To install all git packages, including tools for integrating with other SCMs, install the git-all meta-package.
We can use yum
or dnf
to install git
on CentOS 8. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install git.
Install git on CentOS 8 Using dnf
Update yum database with dnf
using the following command.
sudo dnf makecache --refresh
The output should look something like this:

Metadata cache created.
After updating yum database, We can install git
using dnf
by running the following command:
sudo dnf -y install git
Install git on CentOS 8 Using yum
Update yum database with yum
using the following command.
sudo yum makecache --refresh

After updating yum database, We can install git
using yum
by running the following command:
sudo yum -y install git
How To Uninstall git on CentOS 8
To uninstall only the git
package we can use the following command:
sudo dnf remove git
