Introduction

In this tutorial we learn how to install fakeroot on CentOS 8.

What is fakeroot

fakeroot runs a command in an environment wherein it appears to have root privileges for file manipulation. fakeroot works by replacing the file manipulation library functions (chmod(2), stat(2) etc.) by ones that simulate the effect the real library functions would have had, had the user really been root.

We can use yum or dnf to install fakeroot on CentOS 8. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install fakeroot.

Install fakeroot on CentOS 8 Using dnf

Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache --refresh

The output should look something like this:

After updating yum database, We can install fakeroot using dnf by running the following command:

sudo dnf -y install fakeroot

How To Uninstall fakeroot on CentOS 8

To uninstall only the fakeroot package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove fakeroot
