What is snappy

Snappy is a compression/decompression library. It does not aim for maximum compression, or compatibility with any other compression library; instead, it aims for very high speeds and reasonable compression. For instance, compared to the fastest mode of zlib, Snappy is an order of magnitude faster for most inputs, but the resulting compressed files are anywhere from 20% to 100% bigger.

We can use yum or dnf to install snappy on Rocky Linux 8. In this tutorial we discuss both methods but you only need to choose one of method to install snappy.

Install snappy on Rocky Linux 8 Using dnf

Update yum database with dnf using the following command.

sudo dnf makecache --refresh

After updating yum database, We can install snappy using dnf by running the following command:

sudo dnf -y install snappy

Install snappy on Rocky Linux 8 Using yum

Update yum database with yum using the following command.

sudo yum makecache --refresh

After updating yum database, We can install snappy using yum by running the following command:

sudo yum -y install snappy

How To Uninstall snappy on Rocky Linux 8

To uninstall only the snappy package we can use the following command:

sudo dnf remove snappy
