In this tutorial we learn how to install serf on Kali Linux.

What is serf

serf is:

Serf is a decentralized solution for service discovery and orchestration that is lightweight, highly available, and fault tolerant.

Serf runs on Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. An efficient and lightweight gossip protocol is used to communicate with other nodes. Serf can detect node failures and notify the rest of the cluster. An event system is built on top of Serf, letting you use Serf’s gossip protocol to propagate events such as deploys, configuration changes, etc. Serf is completely masterless with no single point of failure.

This package contains the tool/service.

There are three methods to install serf on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install serf Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install serf using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install serf

Install serf Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install serf using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install serf

Install serf Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install serf using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install serf

How To Uninstall serf on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the serf package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove serf

Uninstall serf And Its Dependencies

To uninstall serf and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove serf

Remove serf Configurations and Data

To remove serf configuration and data from Kali Linux we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge serf

Remove serf configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

We can use the following command to remove serf configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge serf
