How To Install quagga on Debian 9
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install quagga on Debian 9.
What is quagga
quagga is:
GNU Quagga is free software which manages TCP/IP based routing protocols. It supports BGP4, BGP4+, OSPFv2, OSPFv3, IS-IS, RIPv1, RIPv2, and RIPng as well as the IPv6 versions of these.
As the predecessor Zebra has been considered orphaned, the Quagga project has been formed by members of the zebra mailing list and the former zebra-pj project to continue developing.
Quagga uses threading if the kernel supports it, but can also run on kernels that do not support threading. Each protocol has its own daemon.
It is more than a routed replacement, it can be used as a Route Server and a Route Reflector.
This metapackage depends on the full suite of Quagga routing daemons.
There are three methods to install quagga on Debian 9. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install quagga Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install quagga using apt-get by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install quagga
Install quagga Using apt
Update apt database with apt using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install quagga using apt by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install quagga
Install quagga Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install quagga using aptitude by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install quagga
How To Uninstall quagga on Debian 9
To uninstall only the quagga package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove quagga
Uninstall quagga And Its Dependencies
To uninstall quagga and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 9, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove quagga
Remove quagga Configurations and Data
To remove quagga configuration and data from Debian 9 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge quagga
Remove quagga configuration, data, and all of its dependencies

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge quagga
