What is postgresql-postgis
postgresql-postgis is:
PostGIS adds support for geographic objects to the PostgreSQL object-relational database. In effect, PostGIS “spatially enables” the PostgreSQL server, allowing it to be used as a backend spatial database for geographic information systems (GIS), much like ESRI’s SDE or Oracle’s Spatial extension. PostGIS follows the OpenGIS “Simple Features Specification for SQL”.
This metapackage depends on the PostGIS package for PostgreSQL 15.
There are three methods to install postgresql-postgis
on Debian 12. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude

Install postgresql-postgis Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install postgresql-postgis

Update apt database with apt

After updating apt database, We can install postgresql-postgis

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install postgresql-postgis
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install postgresql-postgis
How To Uninstall postgresql-postgis on Debian 12
To uninstall only the postgresql-postgis
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove postgresql-postgis
Uninstall postgresql-postgis And Its Dependencies
To uninstall postgresql-postgis
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 12, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove postgresql-postgis
Remove postgresql-postgis Configurations and Data
To remove postgresql-postgis
configuration and data from Debian 12 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge postgresql-postgis
Remove postgresql-postgis configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove postgresql-postgis
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge postgresql-postgis
