What is nvi-doc

nvi-doc is:

Vi is the original screen based text editor for Unix systems. It is considered the standard text editor, and is available on almost all Unix systems.

Nvi is intended as a “bug-for-bug compatible” clone of the original BSD vi editor. As such, it doesn’t have a lot of snazzy features as do some of the other vi clones such as elvis and vim. However, if all you want is vi, this is the one to get.

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

After updating apt database, We can install nvi-doc using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install nvi-doc

How To Uninstall nvi-doc on Debian 9

To uninstall only the nvi-doc package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove nvi-doc

sudo apt-get -y autoremove nvi-doc

Remove nvi-doc Configurations and Data

To remove nvi-doc configuration and data from Debian 9 we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get -y purge nvi-doc
