In this tutorial we learn how to install loggedfs on Ubuntu 20.04.

What is loggedfs

loggedfs is:

LoggedFS is a transparent fuse-filesystem which allows you to log every operation that takes place in the backend filesystem. Logs can be written to syslog, into a file, or to the standard output.

You can add filters to an XML file to filter on users, operations (open, read, write, chown, chmod, etc.), filenames and return codes. Since it is fuse-based, you don’t need to change anything in your kernel or on your hard disk partition to use it.

There are three methods to install loggedfs on Ubuntu 20.04. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install loggedfs Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install loggedfs using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install loggedfs

Install loggedfs Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install loggedfs using apt by running the following command:

Install loggedfs Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.
