What is image-factory

image-factory is:

image-factory is a command line tool for building golden Linux images. It uses virt-install to do installations via the network. The installation and configuration of the images is done using the netinstall support from the distributions, i.e.

  • preseed for Debian/Ubuntu
  • Kickstart for CentOS/Fedora
  • AutoYaST for openSUSE

image-factory is used by IONOS Cloud to build the golden public Linux images for their Enterprise Cloud. The configuration files are shipped with this project to allow anyone to rebuild their images.

There are three methods to install image-factory on Kali Linux. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install image-factory Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install image-factory using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install image-factory

Install image-factory Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install image-factory using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install image-factory

Install image-factory Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude on Kali Linux first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Kali Linux. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update

After updating apt database, We can install image-factory using aptitude by running the following command:

sudo aptitude -y install image-factory

How To Uninstall image-factory on Kali Linux

To uninstall only the image-factory package we can use the following command:

sudo apt-get remove image-factory

To uninstall image-factory and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Kali Linux, we can use the command below:

sudo apt-get -y autoremove image-factory
