How To Install git-core on Debian 9

In this tutorial we learn how to install git-core
on Debian 9.
What is git-core
git-core is:
Git is popular version control system designed to handle very large projects with speed and efficiency; it is used for many high profile open source projects, most notably the Linux kernel.
Git falls in the category of distributed source code management tools. Every Git working directory is a full-fledged repository with full revision tracking capabilities, not dependent on network access or a central server.
This is a transitional dummy package. The ‘git-core’ package has been renamed to ‘git’, which has been installed automatically. This git-core package is now obsolete, and can safely be removed from the system if no other package depends on it.
There are three methods to install git-core
on Debian 9. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install git-core Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install git-core
using apt-get
by running the following command:

After updating apt database, We can install git-core
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install git-core
Install git-core Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install git-core
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install git-core
How To Uninstall git-core on Debian 9
To uninstall only the git-core
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove git-core
Uninstall git-core And Its Dependencies
To uninstall git-core
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 9, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove git-core
Remove git-core Configurations and Data
To remove git-core
configuration and data from Debian 9 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge git-core
Remove git-core configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
