on Debian 12.
What is exuberant-ctags
exuberant-ctags is:
ctags parses source code and produces a sort of index mapping the names of significant entities (e.g. functions, classes, variables) to the location where that entity is defined. This index is used by editors like vi and emacsen to allow moving to the definition of a user-specified entity.
Exuberant Ctags supports all possible C language constructions and multiple other languages such as assembler, AWK, ASP, BETA, Bourne/Korn/Z shell, C++, COBOL, Eiffel, Fortran, Java, Lisp, Lua, Makefile, Pascal, Perl, PHP, Python, REXX, Ruby, S-Lang, Scheme, Tcl, Verilog, Vim and YACC.
There are three methods to install exuberant-ctags
on Debian 12. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install exuberant-ctags Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install exuberant-ctags
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install exuberant-ctags

Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install exuberant-ctags
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install exuberant-ctags
Install exuberant-ctags Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install exuberant-ctags
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install exuberant-ctags
How To Uninstall exuberant-ctags on Debian 12
To uninstall only the exuberant-ctags
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove exuberant-ctags
Uninstall exuberant-ctags And Its Dependencies
To uninstall exuberant-ctags
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Debian 12, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove exuberant-ctags
Remove exuberant-ctags Configurations and Data
To remove exuberant-ctags
configuration and data from Debian 12 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge exuberant-ctags
Remove exuberant-ctags configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
