How To Install dmtcp on Ubuntu 18.04
Introduction
In this tutorial we learn how to install dmtcp
on Ubuntu 18.04.
What is dmtcp
dmtcp is:
DMTCP (Distributed MultiThreaded Checkpointing) is a tool to transparently checkpointing the state of an arbitrary group of programs including multi-threaded and distributed computations. It operates directly on the user binary executable, with no Linux kernel modules or other kernel mods.
Among the applications supported by DMTCP are Open MPI, MATLAB, Python, Perl, and many programming languages and shell scripting languages. DMTCP also supports GNU screen sessions, including vim/cscope and emacs. With the use of TightVNC, it can also checkpoint and restart X-Window applications, as long as they do not use extensions (e.g.: no OpenGL, no video).
This package contains DMTCP binaries.
There are three methods to install dmtcp
on Ubuntu 18.04. We can use apt-get
, apt
and aptitude
. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.
Install dmtcp Using apt-get
Update apt database with apt-get
using the following command.
sudo apt-get update
After updating apt database, We can install dmtcp
using apt-get
by running the following command:
sudo apt-get -y install dmtcp
Install dmtcp Using apt
Update apt database with apt
using the following command.
sudo apt update
After updating apt database, We can install dmtcp
using apt
by running the following command:
sudo apt -y install dmtcp
Install dmtcp Using aptitude
If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Ubuntu. Update apt database with aptitude
using the following command.
sudo aptitude update
After updating apt database, We can install dmtcp
using aptitude
by running the following command:
sudo aptitude -y install dmtcp
How To Uninstall dmtcp on Ubuntu 18.04
To uninstall only the dmtcp
package we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove dmtcp
Uninstall dmtcp And Its Dependencies
To uninstall dmtcp
and its dependencies that are no longer needed by Ubuntu 18.04, we can use the command below:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove dmtcp
Remove dmtcp Configurations and Data
To remove dmtcp
configuration and data from Ubuntu 18.04 we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y purge dmtcp
Remove dmtcp configuration, data, and all of its dependencies
We can use the following command to remove dmtcp
configurations, data and all of its dependencies, we can use the following command:
sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge dmtcp
