What is 389-ds

389-ds is:

Based on the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), the 389 Directory Server is designed to manage large directories of users and resources robustly and scalably.

This is a metapackage depending on the LDAPv3 server, the HTTP daemon used for server administration, and the graphical console used for server and user/group administration.

There are three methods to install 389-ds on Debian 9. We can use apt-get, apt and aptitude. In the following sections we will describe each method. You can choose one of them.

Install 389-ds Using apt-get

Update apt database with apt-get using the following command.

sudo apt-get update

After updating apt database, We can install 389-ds using apt-get by running the following command:

sudo apt-get -y install 389-ds

Install 389-ds Using apt

Update apt database with apt using the following command.

sudo apt update

After updating apt database, We can install 389-ds using apt by running the following command:

sudo apt -y install 389-ds

Install 389-ds Using aptitude

If you want to follow this method, you might need to install aptitude first since aptitude is usually not installed by default on Debian. Update apt database with aptitude using the following command.

sudo aptitude update
